The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players make bets into the pot and the highest hand wins. There are many different forms of poker, but most involve a maximum of 14 players. Players must ante something (amount varies by game, our games are typically a nickel) to be dealt cards and can raise, call or fold during betting rounds.

A winning hand must contain at least one pair and two unmatched cards. The higher the pair, the better. There are four categories of hands: full house, flush, straight, and three of a kind. High card breaks ties.

Each round of betting exposes a new community card to the table, called the turn. This is followed by another round of betting. After this the dealer puts a fifth card on the board, which can be used by all players, called the river. Then the showdown begins.

In the showdown whoever has the best hand wins. The strongest hand is the royal flush, which consists of the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of the same suit. The next strongest is a straight flush, which consists of 5 consecutive cards in the same suit. Three of a kind is three matching cards of the same rank, and pair is two matching cards of different ranks.

It is important to understand how the rules of poker work to play well. This will help you to make good decisions in the game and improve your chances of winning.
